Sometimes the best thing to do on a holiday weekend is to stay in the city and really enjoy it. Free of tourists and of most residents, for those who stay behind, New York can feel like it’s just yours. For this Memorial Day weekend, we ran around Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights and played in the hot sun and beautiful weather.

You’ll find art on every block in Dumbo.

This guy also did those little figures at the station on 14th and 8th.

Along with art, we saw guys skateboarding down the hill on Columbia Heights.

We ended the weekend by hanging out on the astroturf in Cadman Plaza. I like how it’s so squishy!

imglongboard2.jpgLess than an hour and a half away from knowing whether or not the subway workers are going to strike, I’ve been trying to think of ways to get to work tomorrow (I live on 93rd and Broadway and I work on 17th and 5th Ave). If the subways do stop working, I’d love to cruise down Broadway on these Modern Convenience longboards. Although they’re only supposed to be used indoors (they’re upholstered!), how fun would it be to bert slide from the Upper West Side down to Union Square in these cute boards? It’ll be like a real life Tony Hawke game!

On Saturday, July 9, skateboarder Danny Way jumped over the Great Wall of China. Read about it here.
Amazing!

Joy Martinez skatingI have a new respect for vert skaters! Against my parents’ advice (my mom told me I would crack my head open if I even tried), I still spent a good part of Sunday morning learning how to ride a skateboard. It was fun zipping up and down my boyfriend’s court. I’m convinced though that the only things keeping me on the board were my pink Vans. Maybe with more practice, I can be good as Gator :) !
